As you may or may not know, with the exception of our paid EMS Basic Life Support ambulance and Advanced Life Support chase car, Eureka is a 100% VOLUNTEER organization. That means any fire, rescue, or other emergency happening in our community is being handled solely by VOLUNTEERS! This even includes EMS-type support when our ambulance is handling another emergency.
The truth is, volunteer fire departments in York County and nationwide have seen a major decline in volunteer membership over the last 30+ years. Like the others, we are approaching a critical shortage of volunteer personnel. There have been many suggested ways to remedy the problem, but none seem to be "cure all" solutions.
However, one item that could interest you is what has occurred over the last few years in regards to Tax Relief for qualifying volunteer emergency responders. The lastest came earlier this week, when the York County Commissioners voted unanimously to increase the current “County-wide” tax credit from 50% to 100% for eligible emergency responders. You heard right......a 100% refund of your York County tax bill. Paying taxes isn't fun and this legislation by the County Commissioners is significant. We greatly appreciate them going to bat in an effort to help bolster our ranks.
What's more is that other entities in our area have also passed tax credits for volunteer emergency responders. This includes our local municipalities - Stewartstown Borough, Cross Roads Borough, East Hopewell Township, and Hopewell Township - and also up to a $500 credit from the South Eastern School District tax bill (or earned income tax bill).
Keep in mind, you must meet a certain level of activity to qualify for these tax credits. This can be achieved by training, responding to emergency calls, administrative work, meetings, fundraising, and/or work details. It's not a ton but it ensures you are contributing positively to your community as a volunteer emergency responder - in other words, you "earn" it.
Maybe something like the Emergency Responder Tax Relief programs are what finally encourages you to fill out that application and volunteer your time with Eureka. We could certainly use your help!
